Why New Smyrna Beach’s Black Dolphin Inn Is the Kind of Hotel You Tell Everyone About
New Smyrna Beach slowed us down in the best possible way. It's the kind of place where you linger over your morning coffee, watch the water, and wonder why you don't come do staycations close to home more often. At the Black Dolphin Inn, that feeling is built right into your experience.

Whether you're driving from Central Florida for a quick weekend escape or planning a longer coastal stay, this waterfront boutique hotel delivers something the big resort chains simply cannot: genuine character, personal service, and a setting that puts you right on the Indian River Lagoon.

Waterfront Views with Real Wildlife
The Black Dolphin Inn sits directly on the waterfront, overlooking the Indian River Lagoon (the intracoastal). The views are not just pretty; they're genuinely special.
We watched dolphins in the water from the front porch during delicious breakfasts. If you have a room facing the water, or “bay” view as they call it on their website, you can do the same from the comfort of your balcony. It's the kind of thing that doesn't get old no matter how many times it happens.
Getting There & Parking

We drove to the inn from Winter Park, and the route east to New Smyrna Beach took just over an hour. Parking is included in your stay, which we appreciated — no daily fees, no circling the block. You simply arrive, park in front of or alongside the hotel, and start relaxing.

A Location That Puts You Close to Everything
From the inn, we found ourselves just minutes from everything we wanted to do. Canal Street and Flagler Avenue are both nearby and take less than 10 minutes to get to by car. Between them, you'll find plenty of dining, local shops, and the kind of laid-back Florida atmosphere that makes New Smyrna Beach worth the trip.

The surrounding neighborhood is also lovely for an evening walk, which we did more than once. It was fun to see the neighborhood homes and their cute front porches, which the owners set up to take advantage of waterfront views and boat docks, and life on the coast.
Several Different Room Types to Choose From

In addition to bay views, there are coastal rooms with a limited bay view and courtyard views. We were in a courtyard-view room and loved opening the door every morning to a lush green oasis. It was also nice to walk the short distance between our room and the dining area to grab coffee or head to the front porch.
Our Room: Everything We Needed

Our courtyard room on the ground floor, just a few steps up from the lawn, had two queen beds, ceiling fans (a non-negotiable in Florida in addition to air conditioning!), and a bathroom with both a shower and a soaking tub with jets.
Upon the recommendation of the lovely woman who checked us in, we requested bath salts and bubble bath, which the inn provides. There is no pool or hot tub outside at the inn, but our in-room tub became a highlight for me.

There was also a small wet bar area with a fridge and sink, which came in handy for keeping drinks and snacks on hand throughout the weekend. There’s a filtered water-filling station and ice in the main building.
Tips for Booking to Get the Room and View You Want
If you have specific dates or a particular room in mind — especially one of the waterfront rooms — we'd encourage you to book in advance. The inn fills up, and you don't want to miss out on the view that makes the whole experience.
That said, if a spontaneous New Smyrna Beach weekend is calling your name, it's absolutely worth checking availability on short notice. It worked out for some of the fellow guests we met there, and it might work out for you too.
Breakfast, Done Right

One of the things we think about most when we recall our stay at the Black Dolphin Inn is breakfast, and here's why: the day before, you select exactly what you want from two options on a paper that you write on the good ‘ole fashion way before digital apps and websites took over the world.
We each selected our preferred dish and wrote down any requests, like no onions or sauce on the side. You also choose the time you want to eat. This means that your meal is made to order, nothing is wasted, and you will not be navigating a picked-through buffet. It's a small operational choice that makes a noticeable difference in the experience.
It's also worth mentioning that they serve real fresh-squeezed orange juice! Anyone who has fresh orange juice at home or on vacation knows there is a true difference between authentic pure juice from oranges and juice from concentrate. I was so happy that they serve guests the real deal, from a local company.
Coffee is taken seriously here. There's a full pot on all morning, which the chef consistently keeps topped off, plus a Keurig with a wide range of regular and flavored options. In fact, they had the most flavors we've ever seen, including Peanut Butter coffee from Friendly's ice cream (wouldn't recommend that, but it was fun to try), toffee, mint, blueberry, hazelnut, and more.

We're coffee people, and we were well taken care of. Tea and hot chocolate are also available around the clock at this coffee station.
You also choose where breakfast is served — on the front porch, at a table inside, or on the indoor bar, where you can watch the chef in action. We chose the front porch both mornings because we couldn't resist looking out to the water and trying to spot dolphins.
Evening Entertainment
In the evenings, beer and wine are available for purchase inside at the bar. You can also bring beer and wine to your room if you get it at the local market or supermarket, but if you don't have a car or just prefer to stay at the inn and chill out, the bar is a nice option.
Though Dan and I never got the chance to enjoy it, there's also a firepit on the side of the property. You can ask the staff to turn it on and sit there enjoying the weather, the fire and your night until 10:00 pm.

The People (& Pets) Make It

The staff at the Black Dolphin Inn is genuinely friendly. Over the course of our stay, the interactions felt warm and personal rather than transactional. The inn also welcomes pets, and we loved running into two dogs who were staying there with their owners. It added to the place's relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
What really stuck with us, though, was a conversation we had with another couple who mentioned it was their 28th stay at the inn. WOW! You read that correctly: twenty-eighth.
But we have to admit we weren't surprised. The boutique inn reminded us of our equally amazing stays at The Atlantean in Bar Harbor, Maine, or the Windsor Boutique in Asheville, North Carolina. By the end of our own stay, we completely understood the pull.
Things to do Nearby
We debated staying at the hotel all day and all night, but alas! There were too many fun things to do in New Smyrna Beach that called to us. We went on a sunset kayak tour with manatees, enjoyed an afternoon boat ride with Marine Discovery Center learning about the area's wildlife, including dolphins and birds, visited Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens, and ate and drank at some wonderful local places.

The Black Dolphin Inn is exactly the kind of place that turns a good trip into one you talk about for a long time afterward. If you're planning a waterfront stay in New Smyrna Beach and you want boutique character, personal service, and a setting that genuinely delivers, this is where we'd send you without hesitation.
